What You Will Learn

[00:54] Julia’s journey to becoming a postpartum doula

  • Julia Jones started as a postpartum doula 15 years ago, when no one in her town even knew what that word meant. She was only 24 years old when she became a mother herself and discovered postpartum work through her interest in traditional Indian medicine.

  • No local training was available, and no demand for her services, but Julia saw a need and was determined to make a difference in this field.

  • Julia studied 5 different postpartum doula trainings but found they didn’t get much deeper than practical information about baby care.

  •  Julia started exploring postpartum from different perspectives, including her own background in Social Justice and Community Development. She dove into new areas of studies from anthropology, evolution and brain science, pulling it all together to create what is now Newborn Mothers Collective.

[02:12] About Newborn Mothers Collective

  • Newborn Mothers Collective is an online worldwide postpartum professional training with over 1,000 students from 40 different countries.

  • Julia has written two books, Nourishing Newborn Mothers and Newborn Mothers, the latter is an Amazon Australia bestseller.

  • “Together, we are changing the way people experience the transition to parenthood and, most importantly, changing  the way culture and society values new families and postpartum care.”

[03:22] Newborn Mother’s goal

  • Newborn Mother’s goal is to change the way our society values and cares for mothers.

  • On this podcast, we interview postpartum professionals, academics, researchers and parents with unique perspectives on postpartum.

[03:50] Effort to reflect gender diversity

  • We’ve been making more of an effort to better reflect gender diversity in recent years. We interchange some phrases to be more inclusive such as pregnant parent and human milk, and we hope everyone feels recognised somewhere in the broader body of work.
